There is a belief that the way we're taught by our teachers is universally the best way to learn. However, the research of many scientists and psychologists across the world has disproved many times over and shown that there are in fact 4 types of learner: visual, auditory, reading/writing, kinesthetic learners. All 4 types of learners process and take in information in varying ways.
Visual Learners This type of learner prefers to see the information laid out before them, mostly in the form of diagrams, graphs or symbols. They also like to visualize relationships between ideas. tips:
Watching videos and looking at diagrams are great learning tools.
writing down key works, idead, and instructions (especially if the information given is spoken).
colour coding, highlighting, underlining, and circling important info.
Auditory Learners
This learner best retains information when they hear it being explained to them, rather than seeing or reading new concepts. tips:
Auditory learners benefit greatly when studying with sound recordings and audiobooks.
Reading assignments out loud, especially assignments involving reading a lengthy piece of text / book.
Listening to classical music or lyric-free music [click here to listen to our study playlist] while studying as to not get distracted.
Participating in class discussions often because it is by voicing your ideas and questions will increase your understanding.
Reading/ Writing Learners
This learner reads and writes down the new material being given to them. They also commonly enjoy reading, and feel more capable of articulating themselves when writing rather than talking. tips:
Rewriting and reading over your notes.
rewriting handouts/ information given to you in our own words and making short summaries of long lengthy texts.
Translating visual aids such as charts and diagrams into words so that you are more capable of understanding the information given.
making your own flashcards before tests/ exams and for revision.
Kinesthetic Learners
Those with a kinesthetic learning style have a hard time learning through most teaching methods in school because they find it difficult to be engaged when they have to sit still, which makes it more difficult for them to process the information. Many kinesthetic learners often have great hand-eye coordination and motor memory, which leads them to be good at sports. Many are known to also possess high levels of energy.
tips:
Combine studying and exercise because this combination of activity keeps these learners energized and locks the information and material being studied in your brain. Also being sat down for extended periods of times has been shown to bring down your level of concentration so every 20-30 minutes or so get up and take a lap around the house.
Walk around while reading information because the walking acts as a physical outlet for your excess energy not being released from your normal routine.
